Jig Assist Hooks

Jig assist hooks, like slow-pitch jigs, are speciality manufactured in many different shapes, sizes and weighted ratings. Commonly referred to as assist hooks, some anglers also add a luminous squid skirt to entice a bite in deeper or darker waters. Assist hooks differ from normal hooks by having the hook attached to the jig by a length of PE braid or Kevlar. This is so that the hook is separated from the main weight of the jig, which is done for several reasons: to minimise snagging on the bottom, to increase the manoeuvrability of the hook, and to reduce the amount of leverage that a hooked fish has when it starts to shake or thrash its head. All of this adds up to a greatly increased chance of getting that fish back to the boat.
Having a range of hook sizes enables you to target almost any type of fish without having to buy a new jig or lure for different species. When selecting hook size, a good rule of thumb to follow is that a small hook size in a heavy gauge wire is the optimal choice.
